Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary

Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary

A church that survived the destruction of its village.

Rozvadov - New Houses ,49.68722 , 12.54139Yes - cultural monument of the Czech Republic

Story

In the middle of the Bohemian Forest, a lonely Empire church stands today. But it was not lonely once. It was the spiritual center of Nové Domky – Neuhäusl, a lively border village. The first attempt to build a church here began in 1791, but the wars interrupted construction. Therefore, in 1808, a wooden church was built on older foundations. It was later replaced by a more monumental brick building – today’s Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, built in 1834–1838, while the National Historical Institute dates it to 1836. However, the biggest turning point did not come during the war, but after it. After 1945, life in the border region changed dramatically, and the later creation of a strictly guarded border zone meant the demise of a large part of Nové Domky. The houses disappeared, but the church remained. It lost its sacred function and was used as a stable and warehouse during the Iron Curtain. Today, the empty church is one of the few tangible witnesses of the village that once surrounded it. Since September 3, 2020, it has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic under the number ÚSKP 106567. The NPÚ describes it as a unique example of an Empire-style new church building in the region.
