Kynzvart Castle
Kynžvart Castle · Kynžvart Castle
Metternich's representative residence, shaped by one of the most important architects of Viennese Classicism.
Story
The Kynžvart estate underwent a long period of development. A Renaissance residence was built under the older border castle at the end of the 16th century, and in the years 1681–1691 the Metternichs replaced it with a Baroque chateau. When Klemens von Metternich became one of the most influential figures of the Habsburg monarchy, the old chateau no longer met his representational needs. Therefore, in the years 1820–1839, the Viennese architect Pietro Nobile carried out an extensive reconstruction in the spirit of Viennese Classicism. Kynžvart became the Chancellor's summer and representative residence and a place for his extensive art, book and curio collections. Today, the chateau shows visitors not only aristocratic living, but also the political and cultural world of Europe in the first half of the 19th century.
