Story

The meteorological column was created at a time when spa guests did not have a weather forecast in their pocket. The local Beauty Society had it built as one of its first projects and it was handed over to the public on May 15, 1882. The instruments and data on the column made it possible to monitor temperature, pressure and other climatic conditions, which were also important in Františkovy Lázně for planning spa treatments. It originally stood approximately fifty to sixty meters southwest of its current location. At the beginning of the 20th century, in connection with the construction of the spa colonnade, it was moved to the beginning of Isabel's promenade. Historical sources state that since 1885 it has been regularly supplemented with weather reports compiled by the Imperial Meteorological Institute in Vienna. After decades of operation, the column fell into disrepair, but in 2008 it was comprehensively restored and regained its information function. Today, it is one of the most interesting small technical monuments of the spa town and is an exceptional testament to how meteorology entered everyday public space.
