Temple of Peace in Cheb
Evangelical Church – Temple of Peace · Temple of Peace in Cheb
A neo-Gothic church, whose consecration in 1871 turned into a symbolic ecumenical gesture.
Story
The Evangelical community was founded in Cheb in 1862 and initially did not have its own church. After the construction of a rectory and school, the foundation stone of the church was laid in 1869. The construction in the neo-Gothic style was led by the Cheb builder Adam Haberzettl; historical sources also mention the designs of the Berlin architect Hermann van der Hude and the Bavarian building inspector Müller. The church was consecrated in October 1871. However, Haberzettl died only three days before the ceremony and his Catholic funeral also took place on the day of the consecration. The participants in the Evangelical ceremony joined the funeral procession, which was preserved in local memory as a significant manifestation of ecumenical reconciliation. The tall octagonal clock tower still forms a prominent landmark in this part of Cheb.
