Church of St. Nicholas in Aš
Church of St. Nicholas in Aš · Church of St. Nicholas in Aš
A neo-Renaissance landmark in Aše with a 48-meter tower on the site of an older Baroque church.
Story
On the site of today's church, there was an older Baroque sanctuary, which in the 19th century was no longer suitable for the growing Catholic community. In 1867, the old building was removed and construction of a new monumental church began. The project and implementation were led by Karel Wiedermann from Františkovy Lázně. The new church was completed around 1872 in the Neo-Renaissance style. It has a cross-shaped ground plan and the western facade is dominated by an approximately 48-meter-high tower, which became one of the landmarks of Aš. The building is also an important example of how the sacral architecture of the region changed in the second half of the 19th century from smaller Baroque churches to representative historicizing temples.
